Damiana Leaf Extract
Damiana
Damiana's Latin name, Turnera aphrodisiaca, speaks volumes. Found in certain parts of the United States, Mexico, Central America and the West Indies, the leaves and stems of the damiana shrub are the parts most commonly used for their healing properties.
What Does Damiana Do?
The Maya of Mexico used damiana (which they called "mizib-coc") traditionally as an aphrodisiac and to support sexual health in both men and women. Spanish missionaries were the first to write of damiana, relating that it was made into a beverage by the natives and consumed for its aphrodisiac qualities. According to the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, damiana has been used in the US for its aphrodisiac properties and for supporting healthy libido-related performance since 1874.
Today, damiana is primarily used to help with female complaints and is known for helping to maintain the vital energy of the body - especially in cases of exhaustion. Essential oils from the leaves of damiana stimulate the genital glands, helping to support healthy libido.
Other possible uses for damiana include supporting a healthy mood, helping to soothe stress and anxiety, calming the digestive system, and to support healthy energy levels. Currently, damiana's exact mechanism of action is not fully understood.
Damiana Studies
A combination of damiana, L-arginine, panax ginseng, ginkgo, and certain vitamins and minerals showed great promise in boosting sexual satisfaction and frequency of orgasms in women. Few human studies have been conducted on damiana alone, but animal studies have reported positive results relating to damiana working to increase libido and support sexual health.
